Your Mountain Isn’t a Mountain

Hello everyone!

I hope you are enjoying this site. Because this is also an outdoor blog, I will be posting outdoor blogs every other week on Wednesdays. So let’s talk about today’s topic: “Your mountain isn’t a mountain.”

That’s what anyone from Colorado has told me over the years….

You see, when you live in a state where the highest mountain is 14,000 ft+, you tend to look at your geography a little different than anyone else. When I lived in Washington State, I had a hiking/climbing friend from Denver who teased me when I pointed to a nearby mountain and said, “That’s Mount Spokane.”

“No it isn’t,” he said, “It’s a foothill.”

We argued a little bit but he was adamant that it was a foothill. Well, what in the world does that mean?

To some, especially in Denver, there are these,….I’m just going to say mountains in front of the Rockies. But they are noticeably smaller than the Rockies behind them. In local terms, they call these mountains foothills. But! Anywhere else in the world, rock formations of that size are called mountains.

So, am I wrong for calling these formations mountains? Are they not? What are mountains then?

I finally found a clarification video from a scientist and Youtuber, Tom Scott. Here’s the video explaining the dilemma and hopefully it will provide some answers:

Welcome to the New WeatherWanderings.com!

Hello!

I am so pleased to announce our newly renovated weatherwanderings.com! We have put a lot of work in to this site for the last year and are so excited for the new improvements we made to the blog!

So what’s new you ask? Well, let me tell ya!

For starters, we purchased the domain name for weatherwanderings for a lot easier access to our blog. Now you can just type in weatherwanderings.com and it will take you straight to the site. NIIIICCCCEEEE.

Also, I wanted to start forecasting for several areas where our subscribers are from (Sweet right?!) For the last year, I’ve traveled to several events and have been asked to forecast for friends and family. When I forecast for someone new, usually they ask me, “Hey what weather app do you use? Which one is the best?” Honestly, I am in my final year of getting a degree in meteorology so naturally, I have been taught how to forecast without an app. ┬áThat’s right, these forecasts are all me baby! So why not put together a site that you can access daily and I can become your weather app! Pretty cool right?

Currently, I am forecasting daily for the following areas:

  1. Kingman, AZ and Phoenix, AZ
  2. San Francisco Bay Area
  3. Denver and Colorado Springs
  4. Las Vegas
  5. Spokane and Coeur D’Alene

If your area is not covered, please tweet me @wxwanderings ! If I get enough requests to do a certain area, I will add it to my list.

Also, there are now direct links to all my youtube videos and Instagram photos. Yes!

So go ahead and click around…we really hope you find this site useful.
